April 17, 2013, Wednesday - VZCM Monthly Meeting, 12 PM noon, at the Savannah Winery and Bistro, 574 E. Dallas (Hwy 64), Canton, Texas, telephone (903)567-6810. The public is welcome to attend this working lunch and meeting.

May 18, 2012, Saturday - Armed Forces Day. President Harry S. Truman led the efforts to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country. On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced th creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace seperate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense.

May 25, 2012, Saturday - Pancake Breakfast at Applebee's from 8am to 10 am. Followed by a Catholic Blessing of the Veteran's Memorial at 10:30am.

May 27, 2012, Monday - Memorial Day band Concert by the Canton High School Band  10:30 - 12:30. Master of Ceromony will be Mayor Candidate Rick Lawrence, a 21 gun salute by the Canton Police Department Honor Guard. Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.
